Rose Quartz for Pets: The Soft Pink Stone, Explained

Rose quartz is the soft pink member of the quartz family, and one of the easiest natural stones to live with. It is hard, it keeps its colour in everyday light, and polished into a smooth bead it makes a quiet, pretty detail on a collar. Here is what it is, where it comes from, and how to wear and clean it safely on a dog or cat.

What rose quartz is

Rose quartz is a pink variety of quartz, one of the most common minerals on Earth. Its colour comes from microscopic mineral fibres that line up inside the stone as it forms, according to GIA. Those fibres also give it a slightly cloudy, milky look rather than a glassy one, which is why it is usually cut into smooth beads and cabochons instead of faceted gems.

Where it comes from

Rose quartz forms in pegmatites, coarse-grained rocks that crystallise slowly deep underground. It is found in many parts of the world, with well-known sources in Brazil and Madagascar. People have worn it for a very long time: GIA notes that rose quartz beads from Mesopotamia have been dated to around 7000 BC.

What it looks like up close

Colours range from a pale blush to a deeper rose. Most pieces are translucent rather than clear, and many show soft, cloudy patches inside. No two beads are exactly the same shade, which is part of the charm.

How it holds up on a collar

Rose quartz rates 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, so a polished bead shrugs off most daily bumps against bowls and floors. Strong, prolonged sunlight can slowly fade some pink quartz, so a collar that lives indoors between walks is ideal.

Rose quartz on a LuStar charm

On our LuStar zodiac charms, rose quartz appears in three pairings: Taurus (with green aventurine), Virgo (with amethyst) and Libra (with aquamarine). Each charm clips onto any collar, which makes it an easy birthday or gotcha-day gift.

Wearing it safely

  • Choose a smooth, polished stone that is firmly attached, sized to your pet.
  • Check the fit: the American Kennel Club suggests two fingers should slide under the collar, no more.
  • Let your pet wear it when you are around, and take it off for crating, rough play and time alone.
  • Never let a pet chew a stone. If the charm becomes a chew toy, remove it, and call your vet promptly if you think your pet has swallowed something.

Cleaning rose quartz

GIA recommends warm, soapy water as a safe way to clean rose quartz and advises against ultrasonic and steam cleaners. Wipe the bead with a damp soft cloth, dry it at once, and keep the water off the leather of the collar.

Will rose quartz fade?

Everyday indoor light is fine. Long hours in strong sun can slowly fade some pink quartz, so store the collar out of direct sunlight.
